Predicting a conclusion...

Today was my group's second seminar session for the final week of our BizMovie project. Today our lesson was based off of an inquiry lesson format. The main question that was asked at the beginning of our seminar was about prediction. Prediction is an estimation of something that may happen in the future.

As a group we proposed one prediction that we wanted the students to evaluate and think about deeply. We asked the students what their current capital was and what their profit prediction would be. To create this prediction the students would have to consider how successful their movie would be in a profitable manor. Over the course of this project the students would earn BizBucks by showing good behavior, a good interview with the Venture Capitalist, and the tickets the sold to the second graders in the elementary school. However, you have to spend money to make money! The student had to spend their BizBucks on movie packages that consisted of numbers of scenes allowed in their film, amount of characters, and how long the film could be. Thinking of all of these elements each group looked at their current capital of March 13 and predicted what their ending capital would be by Friday, March 15.

The next two questions that we prompted to the students was to be completed based on their personal knowledge of their movies and the other company's movies. Miss Melodie asked the students to express their vote of which movie they would like to see (beside their own) by raised their hand quietly. This allowed the students to see how excited the other students were to see their movies on the BizMovie Celebration day. Finally, I asked the companies to make another prediction: which movie will be most successful with the second graders? For this question we decided as a group that each company can vote for their own movie, however, to my surprise not many of the students voted for their own movie. The companies seemed more enthusiastic about their colleague's films that they had only seen a commercial for in previous session.

After creating predictions and getting the company's brain working we split up into our company groups and finished up filming our movies. Tomorrow is the BizMovie Celebration at the elementary school and I am both apprehensive and excited to have our company present their movie to their parents, friends, school teachers and administrators. Even though I'm nervous yet excited I know each company will be successful and will see how amazing this opportunity was for both the students and the teacher candidates.
